Wellness Weekend, April 26-30, 2012

Another Thursday evening, another Wellness Weekend! Time flies, doesn’t it? Well, you all stepped up to the plate last week with some mouthwatering sugar-free, whole foods, healthy and vegan recipes! Can’t wait to see what you bring to the table this week.

Newsy Tidbits

  • Kalinda from Wheat Free, Meat Free (whom I had the pleasure of meeting at Nourished!) does a weekly roundup of vegan/vegetarian recipes.  Check out this week’s on her blog!
  • For those of you who were at Nourished (or even those who weren’t!), Cara from Cara’s Cravings has posted her presentation notes–check out her Food Photography tips!
  • The Blender Girl’s amazing KitchenAid Stand Mixer giveaway continues throughout the month!  Each day features a new recipe using a stand mixer, and another chance to win!  Hop on over to Tess’s blog to see today’s recipe and submit your entry.

This Week’s Highlighted Recipes:

I seem to have fallen in love with potatoes again recently.  So here’s to one of everyone’s favorite vegetables:

And This Week’s Readers’ Choices:

  • Readers’ Choice, Savory: Everyday Sandwich Bread from Hobby and More.  This whole wheat loaf is just gorgeous–if you eat gluten, this would be a fantastic choice for homemade bread!
  • Readers’ Choice, Sweet: Sugar Free Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies from Tessa Domestic Diva.  I mean, who doesn’t love a good Toll House cookie? ;)

Thank you to every one of you who played along by submitting your recipes! I love seeing what you all make each week. I always look forward to seeing what you’ll come up with!

Please join us for Wellness Weekend this weekend! There are so many options for healthy foods. . . whether or not you’re vegan, remember that many salads, veggie side dishes, pasta dishes, desserts, smoothies, and more are naturally vegan and can all be included! :)

Here’s How to Participate:

The event occurs once a week, starting Thursdays at 8:00 PM my time and running until the following Monday at midnight.

  1. Simply link up a recipe you made (and posted about) that contains health-supporting ingredients (see list below). You may link up older posts from your archives as long as they contain a link to this post. Please do not link more than once to the same page from your blog.
  2. Please link the post with your recipe, NOT your blog’s home page or another event page. The post must contain a recipe.
  3. You may submit more than one recipe, but please follow the guidelines for each one individually. ONLY ONE THUMBNAIL FROM EACH BLOG POST, PLEASE. If your post contains two suitable recipes, link up once and people will still see all your fabulous recipes when they click on the linky. :)
  4. Please be sure to mention this event and include a link back to this post so that others can find all the recipes posted!
  5. Feel free to use the blog badge, above (or see the left sidebar of this page–if you need the html code, let me know and I’ll send it to you). Many thanks to Adrienne of Whole New Mom for setting up the badge code for me!

What your recipe CAN contain:

  • Any good-for-you, whole foods, especially those with antioxidant properties or “functional foods” (ie, offering naturally medicinal or health-promoting qualities–such as garlic, coconut oil, all vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.)–but any fresh, real food is welcome!
  • Natural sweeteners (coconut sugar, agave, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, stevia, Sucanat, rapadura, coconut nectar, yacon syrup, etc.)
  • Vegan ingredients (even if you’re not vegan, OF COURSE you can still play along! You’ll be surprised at how many foods are naturally vegan; and if not, there are many subs you can use for eggs, milk or butter–include vegan options and we’re good to go!).
  • Note that this is NOT AN ACD-ONLY EVENT. Any real food ingredients that are sugar-free and vegan are more than welcome–so use that maple syrup, those mushrooms, that nutritional yeast, miso, etc! I’m just looking for healthy, whole foods recipes. :)

What your recipe cannot contain:

  • White flour, white sugar, or any highly refined, highly processed ingredients (note that regular brown sugar is actually refined!);
  • Anything almost entirely artificial (ie, most boxed mixes, fast food, faux “cheese,” faux “meat,” or margarine, unnaturally colored cereals or other foods, etc.);
  • Animal products (meat, chicken, fish or seafood, or their by-products, gelatin, eggs, dairy, butter or honey).

Hey! Why was my entry removed?”

I will reluctantly remove any links that don’t comply. I apologize, but I will no longer be able to leave a comment telling you that I’ve removed a non-compliant link.

  • The most common reason entries are removed is because they don’t adhere to the guidelines: either they don’t contain a link back to this post, they contain ingredients that aren’t listed here, they link to another blog event, or they contain neither a recipe nor anything directly related to food preparation. If you render a recipe vegan-friendly by adding a vegan option to your ingredients, your post will be good to go! For older posts, you’re welcome to re-post them during the week of the event, or choose a newer recipe.
  • Another reason posts are removed is because the link leads to an advertisement or a business blog. Please do NOT link up posts that are merely referrals to a different post or the home page for another blog event.
  • I hate to have to remove links! PLEASE read the guidelines before posting!

And n0w. . . what have you been cooking up lately? Please share!

Never miss a recipe–or a comment from The Girls! Click here to subscribe to Diet, Dessert and Dogs via email. (“We love subscribers, Mum. . . almost as much as treats!”)

  1. Another great round-up, Ricki! Yum!

  2. Hi Ricki,

    Some great picks this week!

This week I am sharing two recipes:

    (1) Grain free Spanish “rice” (a SCD friendly recipe)

    (2) Our families favorite, allergy-friendly socca bread.

    Have a great weekend,
    –Amber

    • Also sharing a carrot and apple soup complimented with ginger and lemon. A healing soup, very gentle on digestion and a great recipe if you’re suffering from a Crohn’s or Ulcerative Colitis flare!

      –Amber

  3. Saw that pizza crust recipe last night. So creative!

Last week of classes for my students. One more week w finals then maybe I can get back in the kitchen and create something to share :-)

  4. Cool, reader fav!! I am pretty sure that won;t be my roll next week with two vegetable dishes…if our linky party greatest hits is any indication. Ironically, I go to parties to find savory dishes to try. I guess I lean away from the norm…! I love both of the dishes I shared this week. Both are super healthy, nothing too fancy in the ingredient lists, but super flavor results! Thanks Ricki!!

  5. Hope my recipe is okay to share! It contains organic cane sugar, but I included substitution tips for using coconut palm sugar…

  6. Thanks for highlighting the roundups Ricki! I posted whiskey sours this week. And while they’re tasty, they don’t exactly promote wellness. But I will be back next week.

  7. Oh, Ricki, you’re such a dear to link to my hash browns recipe–thank you! We’re about to enter camping season, so that means lot of hash browns using those potatoes baked in the campfire coals for us. ;-)

I’m not back in the swing of things yet, but hope to share something for WW soon. Thanks so much for hosting and letting us in on all the good stuff each week. BTW, I’m jealous that you got to meet Kalinda and I’m jealous of her getting to meet you! :-)

    xo,
    Shirley

    • Shirley, you will have to come next time (or we’ll have to meet up at some other event). Hope you are spending lots of time with family and nurturing yourself as much as you can! xo

  8. Hi Ricki! This week I’ve shared a very very simple Bean and Pea Dip recipe from my blog last year! The reason why I’ve shared it is it takes no time to make and it’s a great favourite with my children.

Looking down the selection this week I must admit I’m going to be spending some time on the internet this weekend ..

    Thank you for hosting!

    Vicky

  9. Ricky! I got it right this week. A vegan recipe, lol. Cant wait to browse through all the yummy looking dishes posted. Have a great weekend!

  10. Thank you all who loved the sandwich bread! it indeed is our almost every other week bread! :)
A loaded pizza, more french toasts and simple comfort food Dosa this week!

  11. I hope you are having a wonderful, healthy weekend, Ricki. I’m linking up my Creamy Avocado Cucumber Dressing. I love it on all sorts of salads.

  12. Hi Ricki – I just submitted a recipe (I know, it’s been a while!) but not sure if it is showing up on your end. Can you let me know :)

  13. Thanks to the guidance I received at Nourished, I’ve redirected my blog efforts to simply sharing my adventures in eating healthier and gluten-free. So, no more Wellness Weekend posts with original recipes by me, that is unless I accidentally mix something up that miraculously tastes good and is healthy. I do, however, plan to try recipes from various cookbooks and blogs and perhaps review a product or two. So long as the ingredients in the products and recipes jive with your WW standards, would it be okay for me to link to WW in the future? BTW, I was so star struck by you during your seminar at Nourished, I stumbled through an incoherent question about honey and agave. Thank you for your patience in answering me. :-)

    • Aw, thanks so much, Melie! :D If you ever have a recipe on your blog that fits with the WW guidelines, yes, OF COURSE you can still submit it! Thanks so much for your support of the event, and good luck with your new approach to blogging!
