Wellness Weekend, September 19-23, 2013

Hi Everyone–Welcome to Wellness Weekend!

It’s been a crazy week with the launch of Naturally Sweet & Gluten-Free just one week ago! The book made it to the Amazon Bestsellers list for allergy-friendly within the first day, and has remained there ever since–and it is THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. I can’t tell you all how grateful I am for your steady support, encouragement and cheerleading! Thank you to everyone who is trying out the recipes, retweeting about the book, posting on Facebook, G+ and Instagram, etc.!

I would love to know about your experiences with the recipes and the book!! If you spot the book in your local store, make a recipe or receive a copy at home–please be sure to let me know by tweeting to me (I’ll retweet), taking a pic and posting on Instagram (I’ll repost) or posting on Facebook or Google Plus–and I will repost! And of course if you blog about it, I will most definitely pin to Pinterest and mention you here on an upcoming Wellness Weekend! Thank you all so much! I am beyond thrilled to know that people who may have been missing yummy breakfasts and desserts have been enjoying healthy, “safe” versions since you got Naturally Sweet & Gluten-Free!

And now, on to YOUR news!

Newsy Tidbits:

This Week’s Picks:

Need inspiration for breakfast time? Try one of these recipes…

Strawberry Rhubarb Chia Pudding from Rock My Vegan Socks. I love desserts that double as breakfast, don’t you? ;)

Cherry Bakewell Tart Style Overnight Oats from The Vegan Womble. Yum! What a great twist on overnight oats!

If you’re looking for some breakfast recipes here on the blog, try one of these:

And this week’s Readers’ Choices:

Readers’ Choice, Savory

Raw Carrot Sandwich Bread from Gluten-Free Cat. I really need to give this one a try and see if I can do it without a dehydrator (or just get a dehydrator already!).

Readers’ Choice, Sweet:

Raw Triple Chocolate Brownies from Sweetly Raw. Triple Chocolate, you say? Well, you KNOW this is one after my own heart, right?

Thanks for joining in and sharing all your healthy, sugar-free and vegan recipes. I love seeing what you whip up each week! And I hope you’ll also share on Facebook, Pinterest, twitter and Instagram, too! Wellness Weekend even has its own Pinterest board so you can keep track of each week’s links. Check it out right here.

Here’s How to Participate:

The event occurs once a week, starting Thursdays at 8:00 PM my time and running until the following Monday at midnight.

  1. Simply link up a vegan recipe you made (and posted about) that contains health-supporting ingredients. This means any good-for-you whole foods, especially those with antioxidant properties or “functional foods” (ie, offering naturally medicinal or health-promoting qualities–such as garlic, coconut oil, all vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.)–but any fresh, real food is welcome! No-no’s include white flour or sugar, highly processed foods, or animal products. Definite no-no’s include: cane sugar (evaporated or otherwise), sweeteners ending in -itol, margarines, or faux meat products.Items like vegan protein powder, grain or bean flours, or coconut milk are fine even though they are technically “processed,” since they either contain a single ingredient, or could technically be made at home. Also, please note that this is a vegan recipe event. A minor ingredient with a vegan option is fine, but if the main ingredient is intended to be meat or other animal product, your recipe likely belongs in a different link up event.
  2. This is a recipe event. Your blog post must contain a recipe.
  3. You may link up older posts from your archives as long as they contain a link to this post. Please do not link up any posts you have previously shared at an earlier Wellness Weekend event.
  4. Please link the post with your recipe, NOT your blog’s home page or another event page.
  5. You may submit up to three recipes, but please follow the guidelines for each one individually. ONLY ONE THUMBNAIL FROM EACH BLOG POST, PLEASE. If your post contains two suitable recipes, link up once and people will still see all your fabulous recipes when they click on the linky. :)
  6. Please mention this event and include a link back to this post so that others can find all the recipes posted!
  7. Feel free to use the blog badge, above (or see the left sidebar of this page–if you need the html code, let me know and I’ll send it to you). Many thanks to Adrienne of Whole New Mom for setting up the badge code for me!

PLEASE NOTE: In order to promote your posts and the event, I like to occasionally tweet, mention on Facebook, or pin your blog post(s). On occasion, I will repost your photos in the following week’s Wellness Weekend as well. If you prefer that I NOT use your photos or links, please let me know in the comments below, or send an email to me at dietdessertdogsATgmailDOTcom. Thanks!

I will reluctantly remove any links that don’t comply. I apologize, but I will no longer be able to leave a comment telling you that I’ve removed a non-compliant link. I hate to have to remove links! PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES BEFORE POSTING!

And now. . . what have you been cooking up lately? Please share!

Never miss a recipe–or a comment from The Girls! Click here to subscribe to RickiHeller.com via email. You’ll get recipes as soon as they’re posted, plus cookbook updates and my upcoming newsletter this fall! (“We love subscribers, Mum. . . almost as much as we love treats!”

  1. Hi Ricki! It was great to see you last weekend! This week I’m sharing Apple Crisp.
I hope you are able to take a breath and enjoy your week :)

  2. Congratulations on the success of your book Ricki! I’m so pleased for you!! I brought along my Almond and Butternut Squash Bites today!

    Have a lovely weekend!

  3. Hi Ricki,

Lovely highlights this week. Congratulations on reaching such a high status on Amazon! Well it’s very VERY well deserved. Your book is an incredible reference. And your recipes are superb!! I can’t wait to share my post and giveaway next month. :-)

This week I am sharing two recipes. One new recipe (the carob fudge) and an older recipe (raw carrot hummus). We have a lot of figs in season right now, and I LOVE the flavor combination of the carrot hummus, figs and cucumber. So lovely.

So I have to drop a little MM news on ya. Did you read about the season split? Arg! Looks like they are splitting season 7 into two years. So season seven will air in 2014 (with 7 episodes) and then we have to wait until 2015 for the second part and final 7 episodes. They really know how to keep us hanging!!!

    Have a great weekend, Ricki.

    • Ack!!! No, I didn’t hear the MM news–sob, boo hoo!!! Will look forward to the 2014 continuation, of course!

And thanks so much for the kind words re: the book, Amber! I can’t wait to see your review, too! In the meantime, I am more than happy with this fudge. . . I saw it on your blog and had to pin! :D

  4. Congratulations on your book doing so well! Hard work pays off :)
I brought Blender Flatbread and Chocolate Chip Quinoa Cookie Pizza (which uses cooked quinoa). Both recipes are gluten-free, dairy-free and refined sugar free.

    • Thanks so much, Marianne! And yes, lots of hard work (those photo sessions almost killed me–LOL!), but certainly worth it when you see the final product in your hands! :D Both your contributions sound amazing–off to check them out! :)

  5. Happy Friday! Congrats on the book…and your Apple Pumpkin Crumb Bars sound delish.

I’m sharing a savory recipe to use up the rest of summer’s bounty: Summer Squash and Green Bean Salad with Basil Vinaigrette. (The dressing alone is awesome.) Hope you enjoy!

  6. Thank you for hosting Ricki! I’m sharing my Chocolate Chip Pizookie recipe this week. I hope you have a great weekend!

  7. Thank you, Ricki, for sharing my raw bread! And YES you do need a dehydrator! It’s so much fun!!!
This week I have a lemony smoothie to share. Have a great weekend!!

  8. Hi Ricki!
Thanks so much for hosting! This week I’m sharing my recipes for Denali Trail Mix (this post also documents my family’s trip last weekend to Denali National Park & Preserve, Alaska) and Dairy Free Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer. Have a great weekend!

  9. So pleased for you r.e. the new book! Totally deserved.
I’m a little late to the party this week but am submitting a couple of recipes :)

  10. Hi Ricki,
Congrats on all your book success, you deserve it! Thank you for sharing my chia seed lineup of amazing recipes and for allowing me to include your fabulous grain-free pizza crust! Today I shared my newest obsession, Pumpkin Coconut Butter. It’s so creamy and tastes just like pumpkin pie. Have a beautiful weekend! xoxo, Shelley

    • Oh, thanks so much, Shelley! My pleasure, and thanks for posting my pizza crust. :) And I can tell by the name alone that I will have to make that coconut butter–sounds divine!

  11. I look forward to this email each week and your great recipes..

Congratulations on your book too… there a lot of hard work, you’re an inspiration.. :-)

  12. Lovin’ the new cookbook! And so much here looks delish.

  13. I so look forward to this post each week… loving those Raw Triple Chocolate Brownies.. Wow!

  14. Huge congrats on the cookbook, Ricki, you deserve the success!

  15. How do you get your baked goods not to crumble without using guar gum or xanthan gum? I’ve noticed more and more bloggers gearing away from this ingredient, but rarely do my own recipes turn out without it. any suggestions????

    • Hi Anonymous,
I do use xanthan gum (but not guar gum–though I have nothing against it!). Lots of bloggers use ground chia or flax as replacements, and I’ve recently fallen in love with psyllium, as in this recipe. Hope that helps!

  16. Congratulations on making it straight to the Amazon bestsellers list. That is awesome! You must be so thrilled :D
And thank you so much for linking up to my book giveaway. I had a surge of entrants last weekend which I’m sure was in no small part down to your shout out ♥
At the moment I’m salivating over those Cherry Bakewell Overnight Oats! I’m astounded at how creamy they look.. I’m heading over to check out the recipe right now :)
