Who doesn’t love a great homemade cookie?
When I first opened my baking business, Bake It Healthy, back in 2004, I decided to dream big: I left a phone message with Eden Hertzog, owner of New Moon Kitchen cookie company, asking if I could interview her.
New Moon, you see, was the first all-vegan, all-natural cookie company in Toronto that really “made it.” With a variety of cookies with cute names like Ginger Snappers, Love Bites (chocoalte chili) or MoMints; mini cake loaves like Bunny Bread (carrot), Chocolate, or ‘Nana; and a granola featured in upscale gourmet shops like Pusateri’s as well as in the first Whole Foods in the city, I was enthralled by the company’s success. Of course, I’d tasted most of their products and thought they were fantastic, so I already knew about the high quality. For the interview, I was more interested in discussing was how Eden had managed to launch a successful company as a nineteen year-old.
That’s right: she started the company when she was nineteen!
I was both surprised and delighted when Eden called me back and agreed to let me interview her. She was open, friendly, and generous with her information and advice. As we spoke for almost an hour, she explained how her best friend and she had worked in a vegan cafe which allowed them to use the kitchen overnight to pursue their own baking dreams. And pursue they did: their products took off almost immediately, and by the time I spoke with her, they were available across the city and province. These days, you can find New Moon Kitchen in health food stores, supermarkets and gourmet shops across Canada and–yay!–some parts of the U.S.

So what makes these cookies so special? Eden would say (in fact, she does say this in interviews and right on the cookie boxes) it’s because they’re baked with love. Okay, so we all bake with love, right? But not everyone owns a wildly successful cookie company! Other factors that contribute to the ongoing popularity of New Moon products include the “ingredient list to be proud of”: the cookies contain all natural ingredients that are mostly unprocessed, unrefined, organic and with nothing artificial added. In fact, the ingredient list sounds very much like those in the cookie recipes on this blog: spelt flour, Sucanat (unrefined evaporated cane juice), sunflower oil, seeds, raisins, chocolate chips.
All the cookies are also vegan and produced in a nut-free facility. And while most varieties are not gluten free, the Mackies (chocolate coconut cookies) are. I took a tiny nibble of one and was very impressed (and then the HH polished off the rest of it in short order!). In my opinion, these are pretty much the closest thing to homemade that you’ll find in a store-bought cookie.
Even if you bake your own cookies for the holiday season, this variety pack is a perfect gift for someone who isn’t a baker or who doesn’t have access to a kitchen (such as a student). Anyone interested in consuming healthier treats would also find the New Moon Kitchen products to be ideal. I’ve sent New Moon cookies in both of the blog care package exchanges in which I’ve participated, and both times they were one of the favorite items in the pack!
