Dog Day: Still a Happy Day

by Ricki Heller 12 Comments

Having lost my own mother over 15 years ago (yes, far too young, for both of us) and never having personally enjoyed the tangle of emotions that is motherhood, I tend to overlook today’s particular holiday, celebrated by the bulk of the Western world.

While catching up on my ever-expanding list of blogs on Google Reader, I happened upon Ashasarala’s poignant post for today.  It got me thinking:  aren’t I still a daughter?  And what about those other “mothers” I’ve known in my life (both actual and figurative), from my beloved CBC to my older sister to a couple of my best friends? This seems the perfect day to connect with those mothers, whether through birth, adoption, extended family, or simply psychological ties.

So here’s a wish for all of you who are, have been, or just feel like mothers today: may you enjoy meaningful, happy and loving encounters on this day, with the people (and pets) who mean the most to you–whoever they are.

[“See, Chaser, I told you you were adopted!”

“Um, hate to tell you, Elsie, but with that shnoz, it’s obvious that you shouldn’t be sounding so smug, either.”]

    Thank you for posting this.
I lost my mom just over 2 years ago, when I was 24 and she was 53. Mother’s Day has been a tough one ever since, but I get through it by always remembering that I am a daughter, and I still have a mother to celebrate, even if she isn’t physically here with me. I still think she deserves it.

This was a very touching post, Ricki. I too read Ashasarala’s post, and it made me appreciate my mother’s existence even more. I’m so sorry that you too are not with your mother for this holiday; but I hope that you have many fond memories of her that you can reminisce about.

The photograph of your precious dogs is priceless :0)

Have you read, perchance, “Motherless Daughters”? I still can’t read more than a page at a time, but it’s an all-time favorite.

Fine sentiments, Ricki! It would be nice to hear more generous words like yours rather than all the stereotyping marketing mush around mother’s day.

How hard to lose your mother so young. My guess is that she is so very proud of you.

You are definitely a good mother to Chaser and Elsie! So happy mother’s day to you!

Thank you so much. I’m glad I could inspire you to do this post. It’s important to celebrate the memories of our mothers as well as spread well wishes to those of them who still have theirs in life.

Hope your day was peaceful and happy as well. 🙂
