Do you drink greens drinks? Made from dehydrated, powdered green vegetables (and sometimes other high-antioxidant foods like sea algae or healthy grasses), they offer an intensive punch of nutrients in a small scoop of powder that can be added to smoothies or other beverages.
I’ve been taking spirulina (another type of green algae) with my flax and/or chia daily for almost a decade (what the HH calls “Green Slime,” though Chaser loves the stuff) and was more than ready for a little change of pace.
At first, I wasn’t exactly enamored of the flavor when the powder is imbibed on its own in a liquid. Depending on the brand, I could often sense the earthy, slightly bitter wheatgrass undertones (I actually really enjoy freshly squeezed wheat grass juice, but the freeze-dried flavor doesn’t agree with me). What to do? My desire to benefit from the amazing nutritional qualities of the powder overruled my initial gustatory reluctance. I decided that I had to find a way to create a smoothie that I loved using powdered greens.
And guess what? I SUCCEEDED! This combination of the powder, raw cacao powder, avocado and mesquite is a perfect cloak for the earthy greens. All you’ll taste is a slightly chocolate, slightly malted, sweet and appealing drink.
And your cells, no doubt, will thank you.
Chocolate Malted Smoothie
A great mid-afternoon pick-me-up or a rich, creamy dessert. Add ice for a cool summer sipper out on the patio.
1/2 just-ripe avocado, peeled and cut in chunks
1/2 fresh or frozen pear, cut in chunks (I used frozen for a very rich, creamy texture)
1 Tbsp (15 ml) raw cacao powder (you can use regular cocoa, but the flavor will be more bitter)
1 tsp (5 ml) mesquite powder
1 Tbsp (15 ml) chia seeds (see note)
1-1/3 cups (320 ml) plain or vanilla unsweetened almond milk or soy milk
15-25 drops plain or vanilla stevia liquid, to your taste
1 scoop of your favorite greens powder (I like this one)
Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender and blend until perfectly smooth. Drink immediately. Makes 1 large or 2 smaller servings.
NOTE: If you don’t have a high-powered blender, grind the chia seeds in a coffee grinder before adding them to the blender.

girl, i got you on twitter, too. ;] (hallelujahvegan)
that Mushrex Plus stuff has Himematsutake in it, which is apparently the “common name” for Agaricus blazei. that blows my mind.
I would buy some vanilla, stevia, and some GF flours to do more experimenting with. I’m learning a little at a time.
I already followed DDD on FB.
if i were to win, i think i’d spend the $50 on a big container of some real good whole meal powder, like vega or that raw stuff. i can’t afford that stuff but my life is busy enough these days to where it’d be really useful.
or, i could just start stocking up on useful herbals/teas/etc to get my medicinal shelf started.
I registered at iHerb. Thanks for offering this, Ricki!
It would take me forever to narrow it down, but I would definitely get some beeswax beads to make homemade herbal salves, and probably liquid vanilla stevia and other items I normally don’t treat myself to!
…and Organic Lentinula edodes would be my pick for Madre ingredients.
i’m following you on twitter! tweet tweet!
signed up on iherb! woohoo!
i like you on facebook (and in general, from what i can tell).
Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor) is the strangest thing I saw in the a Madre product. I’m assuming it is a type of mushroom, because it was in the mushroom complex called, MushRex (which is pretty funny sounding, as well).
Well, if I had $50 to spend on iHerb, I have to say, I’m probably most intrigued by the Midori Greens powder. However, I noticed they also have pages and pages of meal replacement options, and I might browse through those in a little more detail.
I’ve been signed up at iherb for a while now. I love buying from them!
Their Eureka! Berries product has Seabuckthorn Juice (Hippophae rhamnoides) Powder..I had never even heard of it.
I’d buy some stevia powder, calcium/magnesium tablets and nutritional yeast. 🙂
I’d buy gf flour, essential oils, baby natural/organic skin care, homeopathic remedies for allergies, Amino acids, enzymes and so much more. I’ve already made purchases through iherb and I just discovered DDD tonight so I “like” on FB!!!
I registered (finally) with iHerb.
I already subscribe via RSS.
I’d buy stevia, because I am SO close to running out and that is going to be a very sad day.
The CafeCeps? It has # MicroFungi™ – Certified Organic Full-Spectrum Micronized Cordyceps & Reishi
I’m a biologist and I am not even sure I know what that all means.
Thanks for the review, Ricki- I’ve often wondered how palatable those greens powders are! Love the sound of this shake, since I just adore malt.

I would get some Mrs. Meyer’s laundry detergent, bulk herbs (like dandelion and bilberry), cashews and a couple different GF-flours.
I’m registered and I would love some teff flour, stevia, and so much more…

Living in a rural area leaves me with no choice but to shop online. Now, I have a trusted source thanks to your suggestion! Can’t wait to place my first order. Oh happy day!
so unlike my dad’s favourite malted chocolate milk – am amazed at how regularly you have spirulina – it is something I feel maybe I should drink but really only have in a favourite bottled juice called green power

Um… “micronized mushroom heteropolysaccharide complex” Okay then. That sounds yummy. Or not.
I’ve been dying to try mesquite powder and lucuma powder, but haven’t bought any yet ’cause they’re expensive. But, if it’s a shopping spree, well I’m all about the fun stuff!

Hi, I’ve been registered at iHerb!
I think the weirdest ingredient is Chokeberry Juice in the Immune Punch! That sounds dangerous.
If I had 50 bucks to spend at iHerb I would buy every kind of flour I’ve always wanted to try.
I quite like the sounds of “MushRex™ (a blend of six certified organic, traditionally-used mushroom species, plus Camu Camu berry extract)”
On iherb.com I would buy the Garden of Life Raw Protein powder, I’ve been dying to try it!

I actually on’t know much about mesquite (which is in your recipe) so I would probably pick up some of that on iHerb…. and some maca powder and maybe some goji berries.. or maybe lucuma or acai powder. 🙂

Um,agaricus and turkey tail? I guess the mushrooms need company in the MushRex Plus. Weird.

Dried Yeast Fermentate Complex in the Immune Punch….what is THAT?
Micronized Reishi sounds pretty odd – and given that it is fungi, I guess makes it non-ACD!
I would buy probiotics and chlorella powder !

There are lots of “exotic” ingredients that I’ve long wanted to try, but on my limited grad student budget haven’t had the chance. I would like to try mesquite, acai, cacao nibs, some type of protein powder (maybe hemp), and some kind of green powder (maybe Midori green). Thanks again for a great giveaway!

Brilliant combination Ricki! I hear you on that. I like greens, but have noticed that I am someone who really, really tastes bitter. Some people can glaze over the bitter taste of greens in things like this, but it is too sharp and contrasting for me.
Wow, good looking “malt”, and a great giveaway RIcki!

Have really addicted to iherb recently after the first order with them, fast and reliable shipping, products offer are wide and with reasonable price!
I wanna use the $50 shopping spree to buy the organic skin products, Dessert Essence and Avalon Organics, which I have looking around in my country for so far. Iherb offer best price around, even after included shipping fee, it’s still cheaper than buy in local.
Dessert Essence is definitely the brand I wanna try out after read so many positive comments online. Hope I can get the $50 shopping spree so I can enjoy organic skincare!
I’m already signed up @ iherb (great site) and I liked them on facebook! I would most definitely get maca powder, hemp seeds, vitamins, and try the Midori Greens!

I know for sure I’d want to try some mesquite powder, chia seeds, farro and some stevia extract. Among other things that I’m sure I haven’t even discovered yet!
I’m already a customer with iHerb and have them on FB, I’ve added DDD to my google home page and I’ve friended you on FB… I don’t do twitter though! I have sooo much going on I can’t keep up with it all 🙁 But I think that the ingrediant that caught my attention was “contains NO No-No’s” Haha, the more No’s the better! Especially when it comes to baby products (Mild Nature for baby lotion). I would go crazy at iHerbs with a $50.00 spree. First thing I’d do is buy me som coconut oil – it seems like one of those products that you can do virtually anything with and I mean anything LOL!!! And I’ve never used it. iHerbs has sooo many great products – it will be hard to choose, but I think I can do it 🙂
I registered on iHerb and would be liquid stevia, hemp seeds, green powder and cocoa powder, to start…
Registered myself with iHerb! I’d definitely be getting myself some of the different flavours of stevia from Stevita & NuNaturals. It’s really hard to find stevia in the part of Sweden I’m in, & haven’t found anything like the different flavoured varieties that are available. Oh my, to be able to play with some flavours!
