A rich and creamy fat bomb shake that’s not only vegan, but a great source of protein, too. Plus it’s sugar-free, gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, egg free, soy-free, nut-free, yeast-free, and low glycemic. Suitable for all stages on an anti-candida diet.
So if you follow holistic health gurus or if you’re simply interested in the latest in the health food realm, you probably know that fat is all the rage. (That’s right. Sugar is the new fat, and fat is now the new darling of the nutrition world).
I’ve been hearing about all the fat things for several years now, starting with the Bulletproof Coffee trend that began some time after 2009. In case you’re not familiar with it, Bulletproof Coffee is basically high-quality coffee that has been blended with. . . lots of fat. I mean, lots of fat (up to 1/4 cup or 60 ml in some cases). Of course, we’re aiming for good-quality fats, here, since the point is to enhance health rather than eradicate it.
Even though I’m all for health-enhancing trends and I am usually open to pretty much anything that might work to stave off candida or other chronic illness, I could never bring myself to try this type of beverage (also known as a rocket fuel latte, as my friend Leanne makes it).
Well, since the Toronto area was blessed with an extended summer the past couple of weeks, my mind has been focused on cooling drinks like iced tea and milkshakes. (I’ve also been thinking about how I can move somewhere that offers this kind of weather year-round. If you’ve got any ideas, be sure to leave ’em in the comments!).
So, after I gave up the idea of moving, I started thinking about all the milkshakes I loved as a child. They were rich, creamy, ice-cold. . . and they certainly contained quite a bit of fat (especially since my favorite milkshakes were light on the milk and heavy on the ice cream).
When I finally flipped the bulletproof concept toward a cold beverage, suddenly it sounded appealing. And after playing with ingredients, I came up with this luscious, velvety and sumptuous “milk” shake.
The HH and I both loved this drink, and I’ve whipped up several of these malted fat bomb shakes over the past couple of weeks. While I can’t see drinking this daily as it is rather rich, it made a great indulgence on a warm evening, and even served as dessert one night.
Now, I just need to figure out how to transport this drink to a tropical island. . . without bad weather.
Creamy Malted Fat Bomb Shake
Next time you need a little energy boost mid-afternoon, or if you’re just craving something sweet, try this delectable shake for a healthy indulgence!
1-1/2 cups (360 ml) unsweetened nondairy milk of choice (I prefer almond or cashew for this shake)
2 Tbsp (30 ml) chocolate or vanilla protein powder (I used grain free)
2 Tbsp (30 ml) raw hemp seeds (hemp hearts)
2 Tbsp (30 ml) carob powder
Pinch fine sea salt (optional)
2 tsp (10 ml) Dandy Blend or other instant coffee substitute
1/4-1/2 tsp (1-2.5 ml) pure vanilla or plain liquid stevia, or to taste
1 Tbsp (15 ml) NuNaturals cocoa syrup (optional)
1 Tbsp (15 ml) virgin coconut oil, soft or melted
4-6 ice cubes
Place all ingredients except for ice cubes in a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Add ice cubes and blend again until the ice is melted and the shake is frothy. Pour and serve immediately. Makes 2 servings.

I love the fact that you included Hemp Hearts (Hemp Seeds) in this drink. I was just thinking about trying that with my morning beverage, hemp seeds froth up very nicely and they are really good for you. I’ll have to try your drink soon, it looks amazing!
Thanks, Chantal, glad you like it. 🙂
Aptly named, because this shake DOES sounds like the bomb! Milkshakes are one of my top comfort foods so I’m all about this heathier blend.
Yay, Hannah! Hope you like this one! (And I never made that “bomb” connection–lol!!). 😀
Ricki I am so glad to have found your site. I have been on a plant based diet for 3 years now and LOVE every mintute of it. You couldn’t pay me to go back. I have found amazing resources in your book to calm my sweets craving!
So great to know that, Kimberly! Thanks so much for your comment–and I’m thrilled you’re happy with your diet and ways to calm those sweets cravings! 😀
I’ve just made this and it’s absolutely delicious. I didn’t have any coffee substitute so used some macca powder and omitted the cocoa syrup. Yum, yum. Thanks for another brilliant recipe
Yay! Glad you liked it, Angela! 😀
